Selwyn Segal residents treated to a day of fun

JOBURG - Across the world, some 40 000 volunteers participated in a variety of wonderful causes on International Mitzvah Day, which was celebrated on 22 November.

Among these volunteers were members of the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Johannesburg who made a positive difference to so many people and who themselves benefited from the interaction.

The first Mitzvah Day project took place at Selwyn Segal hostel where excited residents were treated to craft activities and face painting. The hostel is a home for people with physical and mental disabilities.

Volunteers from UJW got into the spirit of the afternoon by ensuring that all residents participated and enjoyed themselves. Once those activities were over, residents settled down to enjoy a delightful puppet show and the day ended with delicious tea and snacks.

According to Diane Levine, chairman of UJW, “It was heartwarming and exciting to see so many members of our community joining together in order to make a real difference to those less fortunate than ourselves. We can really see how this project, and the many others carried out on Mitzvah Day, has helped to shape stronger local neighbourhoods.”

Office and projects manager, Cindy Kree of UJW said, “The joy on their faces, and their concentration and involvement, were the best rewards for the volunteers, many of whom were, for the first time, able and privileged enough to be part of it and to bring happiness to those less fortunate than themselves.”

UJW Johannesburg expressed its sincere thanks to all those wonderful volunteers who so selflessly and generously gave their time to assist with this project.
