Acid attack court case postponed

SYDENHAM - The attempted murder charge against Jan Pieterse, who allegedly threw acid at his ex-girlfriend, Ines Antonio, in front of their three-year-old daughter on a street in Sydenham in November last year, has been postponed to 18 August by the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court.

Pieterse recently admitted in court that he had been sending threatening text messages to Antonio while she was recovering from injuries sustained to her face and chest as a result of the attack. The case was postponed to allow the defence time to go through the text messages.

Sergeant Nurse Sanyane of Norwood Police Station said, “This was an unforgiving act. We will wait for justice to be done.”

The court saw fit to deny Pieterse bail as he had fled the scene after the alleged attack and was later arrested at his father’s home in Vereeniging. Their daughter also sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack, and her safety was deemed a concern.
