UPDATE: Man shot dead during robbery

OBSERVATORY - An alleged robber was shot dead on 30 March in Observatory. 

UPDATE: 1 April 2015, 11:45am – Four men approached five male friends who were socialising in Bezuidenhout Valley Park, and held them up. Three were armed with knives and one with a gun.

Constable Mpho Mashakane from Hillbrow Cluster said, “The armed men searched the victims, [but] one refused to be searched.”

She said the robbers managed to take one wallet and four cellphones from the victims who were searched. The victim who refused to be searched handed over his cellphone and wallet.

A motor vehicle owned by one of the victims was parked a couple of metres from where the robbery took place which the robbers then searched for more loot.

While they were rummaging through the vehicle, the victim who had refused to be searched pulled out a gun and shot the robber who was carrying the firearm. The other three suspects fled the scene.

Mashakane said, “Three shots were fired at the suspect, paramedics declared the robber dead on the scene.”

A case of armed robbery and one of murder has been opened against the victim who shot the suspect at Johannesburg Central Police Station.

UPDATE: 11:50am – According to the security company that attended the crime scene, ‘Bad Boyz Security’, it is believed that the victim allegedly shot the man who tried to rob him with the robber’s firearm, according to a tweet from the security company.

Attempts to contact the security company proved futile and police have still not been able to confirm the incident.

INITIAL REPORT: According to Intelligence Bureau SA’s Facebook page,  an alleged robber has been shot dead in Observatory, Johannesburg. On 30 March the deceased allegedly tried to rob the owner of a motor vehicle at gunpoint.

He was then shot dead.
