Calling for stroke victim support

JOBURG - The Stroke Aid Society is appealing to community members for help with its work for the physical and emotional well-being of stroke victims and their families.

Established in 1986, the self-funded organisation has operated continuously ever since, running weekly support groups at Paterson Park Recreational Centre, South Rand Hospital and at the Soweto Aged Home.

The purpose of these groups, run by qualified therapists and dedicated volunteers, is to assist stroke victims with ongoing rehabilitation following their treatment in hospitals. This rehabilitation takes the form not only of physical treatment such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, but also emotional support and counselling for stroke sufferers, families and care givers.

The Stroke Aid Society provides a recreational and emotionally supportive space for stroke victims, where they are encouraged to build social confidence, self-esteem and independence. The organisation also works to raise awareness about strokes, as well as providing useful information to stroke sufferers and their families regarding adapted daily living and mobility.

In the course of its long existence, the Stroke Aid Society has provided support to hundreds of people affected by the life-threatening and life-changing nature of a stroke. Without the help of the organisation, many of these stroke victims and their families would not otherwise have access to the necessary treatment and assistance.

The organisation is appealing to the community for support with its end-of-year party, to be held on 9 December. Surprise entertainment has been organised, but the organisation requires a sponsor to provide lunch for an anticipated 70 guests.

“Due to the severity of the economic climate, we are struggling to keep our doors open to meet the needs of people who have had a stroke. We are not government funded and rely on the generosity of the public,” said Public Relations Officer Sandra Colombick.

“We sincerely hope our service to our members and their families will continue,” she concluded.
