Woman’s soccer club needs support from community

Although the Sandringham Women's Soccer Club is still going strong, there is stiil a need for support from the community.

Manager, Hilda Hamese, said they appealed to members of the public to attend their matches which are organised every once in a while.

The club was formed in 2011 by domestic workers from the area in a bid to keep fit and healthy. She said the women realised that sitting and watching TV all afternoon was not going to help them stay fit. “We decided to start being active because that was the only thing that would keep us healthy and keep sicknesses like high blood pressure in check,” she said.

The club is affiliated to the Bagolo Batlile Gauteng Soccer League and participate in all games played on and off season.

Hamese said the team would appreciate residents’ help both in cash or kind. She said, “As much as we have need for soccer gear, we also would like to have first aid and emergency personnel available to assist during match days as some of our players are elderly”.

On 21 July the club hosted the league’s annual mid-season tournament where its counterparts from as far afield as Hamanskraal and Mamelodi in Pretoria.

The oldest player in the tournament is 74 years old.

Hamese’s club hosts practise sessions every afternoon at the sports grounds behind the Fairmount Bowling Club.
