National Children’s Theatre educates through performace

PARKTOWN - ONCE again the National Children’s Theatre will present the It’s your life: HIV/AIDS awareness programme to school pupils in Gauteng.

As part of an awareness campaign, the children’s theatre will be visiting primary and high schools to present performances and open discussion with learners focusing on education and change in sexual behaviour among young people.

This programme will run from 2 February and will tour to schools in Soweto, Alexandra, Diepsloot, Sebokeng and surrounding areas. The production has been made possible by a grant from American Embassy.

According to the theatre’s media liaison officer, Sydwell Koopedi, the HIV/Aids programme will offer an opportunity for grade 7 to 9 pupils to develop positive communication skills and to help avoid potentially tragic consequences.

“The main objective is to increase the level of knowledge and awareness among children and youth so that they can make informed choices about their own attitude and behaviour. The vast majority of the youth in South Africa do not think they are personally at risk of catching the virus,” he said.

“In the fight against HIV/Aids, children are being referred to as the window of hope, as their sexual patterns are not yet firmly established. This is the basis for National Children’s Theatre’s prevention education in primary and high schools.”

Koopedi said It’s your life would be performed by a professional company trained to address HIV awareness in a dignified and professional manner.

“This production goes beyond being just another play. While sensitive in its presentation, scenes are performed and learners are given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss relevant issues,” he added.

The programme features actors who are all committed to establishing a platform for discussing what many adults think is a taboo subject. The cast includes Julius van Zyl, Gamelihle Bovana, Shelly Simon, Tsholo Phiri and Zukiswa Angel Ndunge.
