Stop erosion at Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW – The Zoo Lake Users Committee appeals to the public for donations of plants including agapanthus, dietes, succulents, ground covers, wild grasses and aloes.

Locals are urged to get their hands dirty at the Erosion Project Volunteer Day at Zoo Lake on 22 February from 8am to 1pm.

This volunteer day was postponed to 22 February following rain which hampered progress on 8 February.

Erosion project manager Jacky Cresteil said that volunteers will be encouraged to plant the rehabilitation area that has been prepared with soil and hessian. Cresteil said she wants to get as many plants in the ground as possible on the day.

The Zoo Lake Users Committee appeals to the public for donations of plants including agapanthus, dietes, succulents, ground covers, wild grasses and aloes.

Cresteil said, “We are constantly looking for garden tools, wheelbarrows, garden gloves and gazebos to host our events.

“Our beautiful park is worn out. The Zoo Lake User Committee understands that City Parks has funding for maintenance but not rehabilitation projects that are desperately needed. When people volunteer their time to come and help, it helps us move forward at a quicker pace.”

Cresteil said the committee has committed to volunteer at the lake every Tuesday between 8.30am and 2pm and also encourages residents to join them for any portion of the time.

“The rehabilitation of Zoo Lake is not a quick fix. These projects are mammoth tasks that require dedicated members of the community to raise funds, manage each project, encourage volunteers and publicise our volunteer days.

“Our community needs to come together to ensure that we preserve our beautiful park for the next 100 years.”
