JCPZ seasonal blitz ensures zoo and Zoo Lake are in tip-top shape

PARKVIEW – Chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Group Fran Haslam was pleased with the work done by JCPZ at the blitz.

Over 200 Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) staff were hard at work on 18 January for the seasonal blitz at the Johannesburg Zoo and Zoo Lake Precinct.

Recently appointed MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds said, “Our reason for being here today is to ensure that our park and zoo are looked after and also come to speak to our workers to boost their morale. This follows the social media post in December about the zoo not being taken care of.”

Arnolds said that the NSPCA gave the zoo a clean bill of health during their most recent inspection.

Executive manager at the zoo Lombard Shirindzi said that during the December period, the zoo operated on skeleton staff and the blitz ensured that all maintenance was back to normal.

Arnolds added that aside from ongoing service delivery mandates, the blitz ensured that all concerns shared by residents were addressed.

Some of the maintenance tasks that were attended to included maintenance of animal enclosures, grass cutting, removal of weeds, mulching of flower beds, removal of alien invasive plants, identification and removal of trees infected by polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), replacement with indigenous trees and more.

Chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Group Fran Haslam said she was delighted and excited by the great initiative by JCPZ. Haslam assisted to coordinate workers at Zoo Lake.

“It was a fantastic morning and we are so thankful to City Parks for coming to Zoo Lake. We hope to have this done on a regular basis,” said Haslam.
