Parktown boys speak out

PARKTOWN – Parktown Boys headmaster Malcolm Willams says nurturing values-based, moral leaders of tomorrow is as important as enabling the boys to realise their academic potential.

Parktown Boys headmaster Malcolm Williams said the school enjoyed a most successful year across all five key pillars namely academics, culture, sport, community service and learner leadership development.

The school’s status as a top mathematics school was confirmed when the boys placed 6th in the Wits Maths Challenge out of 5 000 candidates and was the only public school in the top 10 schools at the competition. In addition, in the inter-provincial maths competition, the school placed second in Gauteng and 6th in the country. Their AP maths average remains 10 per cent above the IEB AP maths average.

Cross-country runner Maxime Chaumeton made his school proud when he competed as part of the SA U20 cross-country team at the world championships in Denmark. Rowers Cameron Taberer and Callan Barrell competed in the SA U18 rowing team at the world championships in Tokyo. Cameron Le Forestier was selected for the SA U17A hockey team while Luke Mok made the SA U18 shooting squad. The school also had junior national representatives in gymnastics, archery and karate and there were 19 provincial hockey representatives across all age groups in 2019.

Chess players from Parktown Boys are Central Gauteng League winners and the school also won the Mintek Science Quiz, among other successes.

“We shall continue to actively foster the positive concepts of servant leadership and manliness as we grow good brothers, good fathers, good husbands and good sons,” said Williams.

Central to the school’s growth this year has been the senior boys taking the lead in speaking out against social issues such as abuse against women and children. Representatives from the Grade 11 class read aloud a pledge against gender-based violence at an assembly at Parktown Girls.

“We are proud of our boys’ initiative and their owning of the need to speak out against all such unacceptable acts. Nurturing the values-based, moral leaders of tomorrow is as important as enabling our boys to realise their academic potential.”

“On behalf of the Parktown Boys pride of brothers, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a wonderful and safe festive season and a happy new year,” Williams concluded.
