Northern Suburbs Tennis Club opens doors to Johannesburg Children’s Home

PARKWOOD – Youngsters from Johannesburg Children's Home commit to visiting the tennis club more frequently.

Northern Suburbs Tennis Club served up a treat when it hosted a fun day of tennis and invited youngsters from Johannesburg Children’s Home to join in.

It was on a hot and sunny 30 November that the tennis club in Parkwood paid host to an event organised by a club member, Prenade Makumbarenga.

Club members participated in a handful of matches before the children arrived.

Then, when the visitors filled the courts there was some knocking the ball around with coaches before singles and double games were played.

There were lots of smiles and laughter on the courts as some children who had not had played much before, got a real taste of the sport.

A braai was also held for the youngsters and everyone enjoyed a prego roll and drink while discussing the day’s events. Some children even expressed an interest in the game and wanted to visit the club on a regular basis.

“This is the first time we have done this and I hope we can host children’s homes more often,” said Makumbarenga.

“I grew up playing tennis and I got tennis scholarships at school and university. Yet so many children do not know that there are opportunities for them in sport.”

She added that she hopes to turn this into a larger project by organising training for disadvantaged children to get them further ahead in the game and partner with universities to help them have access to tertiary education.
