Thousands remember cherished loved ones at Tree of Light event

SAXONWOLD – Thousands gathered for a pleasant evening under the stars to celebrate loved ones past and present.

Community members from across Joburg gathered under the Tree of Light at the Joburg Zoo on 24 November to celebrate life both past and present and raise funds for HospiceWits.

Thousands of people picnicked with loved ones while enjoying entertainment from the Sacred Heart College and the Soweto Gospel Choir amongst others. Just after 7pm the Tree of Light was officially turned on, with each globe representing a cherished lost loved one.

CEO of HospiceWits Jacqui Kaye explained that the organisation hoped to raise R800 000 through the event, with globes still on sale until the end of January.

“Today’s event is a celebration of life, both past and present. We have gathered here to remember people and celebrate those who are still with us,” said Kaye.

She explained that the event is an important part of the organisation’s fundraising activities. “This event helps ensure that no one is turned away, no matter their financial situation. We need around R32 million to operate each year, serving over 6 000 patients and their families.”

Kaye said that people can continue to support the work of HospiceWits by donating quality clothing, ornaments, books, furniture and more to their charity shops across the City during the year. “We collect between R3 million and R4 million each year through our thrift shops.”

She also encouraged locals to support their various fundraising events, the next of which is a fashion show in April.

Locals can also volunteer their skills and experience to HospiceWits to reduce costs, for example, nurses and counsellors.

Reflecting on the successful Tree of Light event, Kaye said she was thankful to the HospiceWits partners and those who attended and supported the event. “We are so appreciative of the public and what they do for us. Without them, we could not continue our work.”
