Parkview Police Station has hired a new section commander for the Parkview Detective Branch.
Lieutenant Colonel Fatima Gaffoor said she is ready to lend an ear to anyone who needs assistance and make sure community members leave the station feeling happy.
Having spent the last 25 years serving the police in the Soweto area, Gaffoor feels excited to begin her new role of overseeing all investigations in the Parkview area.
“My role is to ensure a thorough investigation of all crime scenes, secure apprehension of suspects and their attendance in court,” said Gaffoor.
“Nobody comes to the police for fun. People come here in their worst moments and my role is to give ear to them and make sure they leave happy. Helping the community is the most important.”
She looks forward to working in a new area with new challenges and new people.
“I want to increase community participation and involvement. I also want to bring about more interaction with security companies in the area and ultimately make Parkview a safer community.”
Gaffoor believes she was born a police officer. “I could see the injustices that the community was having and said that I want to do a better job and serve my community. So I followed my dream and became a police officer.”
Gaffoor said that it is important to see more women empowered and given a voice.
“Only a female understands what other women go through in instances of crime. We need to break the glass ceiling in the male-dominated police environment.
“My oath is to serve the community. The community should feel free to contact me if they are experiencing any problems. I have an open-door policy.”
