Hundreds participate in the inaugural Parktown Girls Family Fun Run at Joburg Zoo
SAXONWOLD – Young and old participated in the festive event to raise money for sports tournaments.
Over 350 community members participated in the inaugural Parktown Girls Family Fun Run/Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo on 14 September.
The 5km event aimed to raise funds for sports tournaments.
Director of sport Catherine van Eyk said, “The cost of sport is growing tremendously and we are a government school competing with private schools at many of these tournaments. One water polo tournament can cost R10 000.”
“In order to ensure we continue to perform at a high level on the sports field, we need to continue playing in these events,” said van Eyk.
The fun run raised R8 000 for the school and Van Eyk said she hopes the event will grow in upcoming years. “It was a festive and spirited event. Lots of girls had put a lot of effort into volunteering today. This has been a great team effort from staff and learners.”
Bongani Chimboza set the first record for the run when he crossed the finish line in 00:17:48, while Craighall Primary School learner Shalom Pikiti was the first female to cross the finish line in 00:22:21.
