Truluck says the project to widen Jan Smuts Avenue has been put on hold

ROSEBANK – The R230 million project has been put on hold, according to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck.

According to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck, the project to widen Jan Smuts Avenue has been put on hold for at least two years.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported in, Sections of Jan Smuts Avenue scheduled for widening [Online, 14 February 2018], that the project was anticipated to take 18 months to complete, with road works expected to be completed by mid 2020. However, this could now be postponed by a good few years, according to Truluck.

He said, “The City of Joburg has a pro-poor budget so only 40 per cent is available for the leafy green suburbs. This project is cost at R230 million, so it would have taken a large chunk of the remaining budget.

“There was going to be R10 million available this year to remove the trees, but this has now been reallocated to river bank stabilisation.”

He added that there was no indication of when the project would begin. “The Conrad Road bridge in Blairgowrie has taken around 15 years to get underway. The Jan Smuts widening could also take that long.”
