Residents advised of upcoming public meeting to discuss the launch of water pipe replacement project in Saxonwold

SAXONWOLD – Community members, organisations and prospective community liaison officers are advised of the public meeting to take place at 6pm on 28 August.

All Saxonwold residents, organisations, prospective community liaison officers, labour officers, labourers and SMMEs in and around Ward 117 are invited to a public meeting concerning the launch of the water pipe replacement project in Saxonwold at 6pm on 28 August.

The meeting will take place at the Rhino Room at Johannesburg Zoo. Parking will be available at the service entrance in Upper Park Drive, Forest Town, opposite Wynchwood Road.

Topics to be discussed include an introduction of the project, appointment of CLOs and SMMEs and appointment of general labourers.

According to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck, Saxonwold has experienced a number of pipe bursts and water leaks over the last few years as water infrastructure has passed its useful lifespan and needs to be replaced.

“This project will have a major impact on the suburb as over 10km of new water pipes will be laid along 21 Saxonwold roads. All the old water meters will be replaced along with air valves, fire hydrants and isolation valves. There will be trenching in the sidewalks and roads,” said Truluck.

The project is estimated to cost R38.5 million and will take approximately four months to complete. The work will be done under the Expanded Public Works Contractor Learnership Programme Vuku’phile, who also worked on the Greenside pipe replacement project.

Two community liaison offers (at R9 500 per month), two labour officers (at R7 000 per month) and 200 labourers will be needed for the project, ideally sourced from Ward 117 or the surrounding Region B Wards.

Local service providers for toilets, security, fencing, medical screening for labourers, PPE suppliers, office containers and reinstatement contractors for paving and concrete walkways will also be needed.
