Learn more about sexual harassment in the workplace

PARKWOOD – Learn more about sexual harassment in the workplace on 20 August at a discussion at the Family Life Centre.

Following the prominence of the #MeToo campaign and the rise of reported cases of sexual harassment in South Africa, mediator at the Family Life Centre in Parkwood Angela du Plessis seeks to raise awareness about sexual harassment, particularly in the workplace.

Du Plessis revealed that according to 2018 research, among 1 000 people, one-third of women and one-fifth of men have been sexually harassed.

She defined sexual harassment as any unwelcome, unwanted conduct of a sexual nature. This can vary from touching to sexual innuendo, sex-related jokes or quid pro quo for sexual favours.

“One labour appeal court judgment described sexual harassment as the most heinous misconduct that plagues the workplace,” said Du Plessis.

She explained that there were a lot of misunderstandings around the issue because of its emotive, complex, disruptive and divisive nature in a workplace.

Du Plessis added that four things that could lead to misunderstandings included the subjective nature of the impact as opposed to the intent, the silencing of victims, victim-blaming and the fact that it is not about sex but rather about power.

“I want to raise awareness so that conversations can be had at work and in communities so that people can seek out counselling… There is a concern that people don’t know how to name what is happening to them but they feel uncomfortable.”

Du Plessis suggested that anyone who believed they were experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace should approach HR or a trusted person within the workplace who could investigate the matter.

The Family Life Centre in Parkwood will host an event regarding sexual harassment awareness with a focus on the workplace on 20 August from 9am to 12pm. For further information on the cost and details of this event call 011 788 4784.
