Fleming Pre-Primary donates blankets on Mandela Day

CRAIGHALL PARK – Learners were delighted to help keep others warm this Mandela month.

Fleming Pre-Primary School in Craighall Park embraced all the ideals of Mandela Day by not only supporting a women’s blanket-making empowerment initiative in Alexandra but also by further donating blankets to the Mandela Day Blanket Drive.

The broader Fleming community brought in 110 blankets for the Mandela Day Blanket Drive. Fleming Pre-Primary matched the number of blankets by donating an additional 110 blankets for the drive, which they purchased from the women in Alex, bringing the total to 220 blankets.

Principal of Fleming Pre-Primary Pam Royce said this year’s blanket drive followed last year’s successful drive where 240 blankets were donated.

“We loved the idea of supporting two worthwhile causes at the same time. Not only does buying the blankets validate the hard work and wonderful creativity of these women but – as they are all otherwise unemployed and primary caregivers of vulnerable children – also provides them with much-needed funds to buy the necessary essentials for themselves and their families. The flipside to this is that the blankets themselves go to a good cause, helping to keep families warm now in winter when they need it most,” said Royce.

The funds generated from the drive and blankets were handed over to the respective causes ahead of Mandela Day.
