Rocky Road Runners encounter no bumps at Comrades

SAXONWOLD – Rockies sends an army 100 strong to the Comrades Marathon.

Rocky Road Runners sent a whopping 100 runners to this year’s Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal.

This year was the up run, and started at City Hall in Durban and ended at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

The race distance is 87km.

“We had a great group of runners,” said Rockies chairperson, Matodzi Tshidzumba.

“The club achieved six silver medals and we had five runners who obtained their green permanent numbers, [There were] massive achievements for our legends Moses Maphaila and Ronnie Dribbin who were rewarded with their triple green permanent numbers, meaning they have both obtained their 30th Comrades medal.”

Tshidzumba also praised Maurice Rosen who earned his 36th Comrades medal and Vic Boston who attained his 43rd Comrades medal.

Julius Mdhluli was the first club member to finish, which he did in 06:48:00. Yolan Friedman was the first female club member to finish. Her time was 09:54:00.

“It was a tough day in the office for many runners and 80 of our runners managed to complete the race. Dehydration was the main problem for runners who didn’t complete the race and the 3km Polly Shorts hill starting 10km before the finish was also a big contributor to runners who didn’t finish.”

Overall, Tshidzumba said he was very proud of the runners.

He said there was no breakthrough, as the Rockies will be launching a weekly 2.5km and 5km myrun event in July, as well as the long-awaited Zoo Lake Family Run.

On 15 September, the club will host the annual Gerald Fox Memorial Race. Entries are open at www.discovery.co.za/vitality/runseries or visit www.geraldfoxrace.co.za for more information.
