Smash and grab new hotspot

DUNKELD – Concerns about smash and grab attacks occurring in Dunkeld were addressed by the JMPD spokesperson.

Major concerns have risen regarding apparent smash and grab attacks at various intersections along Jan Smuts Avenue.

In particular in Dunkeld, warnings were circulated on social media on 10 and 11 June to alert motorists to use Bompas Road and Jan Smuts with great caution. According to these social media warnings, the smash and grab attacks or robberies occurred throughout the day at the intersection.

Spokesperson for Metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said this was a new occurrence for them in that area and they would now focus on the intersection. “We will deploy officers there. What we have noticed is a reduction in smash and grabs in the inner city because we have officers directing traffic between 6am and 10am every day.”

On their proactive patrol, Cortac Tactical Unit spotted three suspects approach a vehicle at the intersection in question, on 11 June in the evening. When they saw the suspect wield a dangerous weapon, officers jumped out of their vehicle and gave chase. One of the three suspects were apprehended and one firearm recovered. The suspect was handed over to the police. The victim drove away from the scene.

Spokesperson for Parkview police Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the arrest. The suspect will appear at Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on 13 June to answer on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon.

“Parkview SAPS urges the victims of crime to come forward and report the cases of robbery or attempted robbery. An identity parade will be held in order for the victims to identify the suspect,” added Sibeko.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, who has been in touch with the relevant authorities to assist with combating the crimes, said, “The flare-up of armed robberies of motorists at Jan Smuts and Bompas is disturbing…It will take a combined effort, including alertness from motorists, to manage the problem.” He strongly urged any victims to report any incidents, to assist the police.

The particular intersection is bordered by three police station precincts: Rosebank, Parkview and Bramely. “If the JMPD, the three SAPS precincts, and all the security companies got together, they could perhaps coordinate in ways to ensure maximum presence,” added Williams.

Owner of Cortac Mark Notelovitz echoed this statement and explained that there is a good working relationship between police and the security company in the area. He too stressed the importance of reporting any criminal incident, not matter how small. The team have appealed for the victim to report the incident on 11 June to the police or contact their control room.
