Minnaar addresses smash and grab concerns in Dunkeld

DUNKELD – Concerns about smash and grab attacks occurring in Dunkeld were addressed by the JMPD spokesperson.

Residents recently raised concerns about the multiple smash and grab attacks in Dunkeld. Warnings were circulated on social media to alert motorists to use Bompas Road and Jan Smuts Avenue with great caution.

According to these social media warnings, the smash and grab attacks occur throughout the day at the intersection.

A spokesperson for Metro police Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said this was a new occurrence for them in that area and they would now focus on the intersection.

“We will deploy officers there. What we have noticed is a reduction in smash and grabs in the inner city because we have officers directing traffic between 6am and 10am every day. That has helped to keep the traffic moving and not give anyone the opportunity to commit a smash and grab,” Minnaar said.

He added that the Metro Police have a new reaction unit that it launched on 14 May and it has made an impact with several arrests for various crimes, including smash and grabs.

Minnaar said people can call the emergency Johannesburg Metro Police Department radio control centre when traffic lights are off at certain intersections.

“The radio control room is the best number to call on 011 375 5911. That number operates for 24 hours, and we will send officers as soon as possible.”
