IN TWEETS: Children learn about air pollution #WorldEnvironmentDay2019
ROSEBANK – Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba was at the Johannesburg Zoo on Wednesday, 5 June to address over 120 children from various schools this #WorldEnvironmentDay.
The MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Nonhlanhla Sifumba explained to the children that #WorldEnvironmentDay is celebrated in more than 100 countries. The MMC for Group Shared Services (GSS), Valencia Khumalo also said that the day is the third anniversary of the A Re Sebetseng campaign.

Head of the UN Environment Office in South Africa Cecilia Njenga was among those in attendance and she explained that polluted air is killing seven million people each year.

Eco rangers from Pikitup encouraged learners to stop littering. Grade 4 learner Nikita Khosa then requested the Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba to clean up the streets and the parks of the city of Johannesburg.
