Vodacom Super Rugby team gives time to CHOC

SAXONWOLD – The young patients at CHOC had a fun-filled day with the Emirates Lions Rugby team and Vodacom during a house party.

At the peak of the Vodacom Super Rugby season, a week can fly by in a blur of matches, training and other commitments. But for the children fighting a daily battle with cancer, a week in a hospital ward can feel like a lifetime – and for some, that hospital ward has become their second home.

On 22 May, the Emirates Lions took a day out of their Vodacom Super Rugby week to remind the patients of the CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation) in Saxonwold, what home is really like when they gave them a house party to remember.

As part of this season’s #TacklingCancer campaign, the Emirates Lions teamed up with Vodacom to host the children and their families, their caregivers and medical staff as well as CHOC volunteers at an exclusive house party.

Children from the CHOC facilities in Saxonwold and Diepkloof, Soweto were treated to a day of Marvel gifts and goodie bags handed to them by their favourite Emirates Lions players. There were also fun activities on giant inflatables, as much popcorn, and ice cream as they could eat and a selfie booth to capture their favourite player moments.

The Diepkloof CHOC house was also presented with a double-door fridge for their facility.

The CHOC House Party is another element of a commitment by South Africa’s Vodacom Super Rugby teams to tackle cancer in every possible way this season.

Off the field, all the South African Vodacom Super Rugby teams are joining the Emirates Lions in hosting similar events for the CHOC children in their regions. On the field, the South African players know that every tackle they make this season results in R 100 – jointly donated by Vodacom and SuperSport – to CHOC in support of these children and their battle to overcome cancer. Their aim is to raise R 1 million by the end of the season.
