Best of independent primary school rugby on display at Pridwin 7s Rugby Festival

MELROSE – The action-packed weekend saw hosts Pridwin Prep win with a total of 41 tries.

 


The best of independent primary school 7s rugby was showcased at the 10th annual Pridwin 7s Rugby Festival from 10 to 11 May in Melrose.

Ten schools including CBC Boksburg, King Edward VII Preparatory School, Orchards Primary, St Benedict’s, St David’s Marist Inanda, St John’s, St Stithians, St Peter’s, The Ridge and Pridwin Preparatory took part in the action-packed weekend.

Schools were ranked based on their try-scoring, with Pridwin Prep emerging victorious with 41 tries, Orchards in second with 39 tries and St John’s in third with 29 tries.

Director of sport at Pridwin JP Joubert said, “We were humbled and honoured to have the calibre of schools attending. This event once again unified our community consisting of players, coaches, parents, media, staff, and sponsors.

“Matches were marked by riveting performances from all, with up and coming talented new players having the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Boys expressed themselves, played hard, had exemplary sportsmanship, scored brilliant tries and most importantly they enjoyed themselves. This was a memorable festival and brilliant advertisement for our school,” said Joubert.

Marketing manager for Pridwin Prep, Demi-Rae Le Roux said,

“In 2010, Pridwin introduced rugby 7s as part of our school sports portfolio for boys between the ages of 13 and 14 years. The Pridwin Rugby 7s Festival soon evolved and has become a flagship sporting event.”

Le Roux added that the festival was the only prestigious 7s rugby event for independent schools in Gauteng with the sole aim of growing talent and developing rugby across Gauteng.
