SAPS applies divine intervention against crime

PARKVIEW – Key deliverable number seven which is a turn-around strategy by the national commissioner for police is being put into motion by the Parkview SAPS.

Sometimes in order to tackle crime, the crime perpetrator and his or her background including spiritual and moral being should be looked into. On 25 April, Parkview Police Station members had a meeting with the community pastors and reverends in the area at St Peter’s by the Lake Church, in Parkview.

The purpose of the meeting was to make a presentation of the divine intervention approach that was introduced and implemented last year by the National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khehla Sithole.

The divine intervention approach is the national commissioner’s turn-around strategy – key deliverable number seven. According to Parkview’s spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, “Parkview SAPS must ensure that this strategy is being implemented. It is the responsibility of the management of the police station to visit the churches within the policing precinct.”

Divine intervention approach will be focusing on moral fibre investment strategy which is:

  • Repair of injured human and spiritual values
  • Spiritual crime-prevention concept
  • Collaborations on drugs
  • Spiritual crime-prevention link to drug master-plan intervention.

Gauteng Province SAPS Spiritual Service head chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Borotho highlighted that the pastors may pray for the members’ well-being, families, marriages, and spirit of corruption to go away. The pastors that were present in the meeting offered to assist the members of the police service with spiritual debriefing and counselling services after experiencing traumatic incidents as well as prayer requests and one-on-one prayer session with the members.

Sibeko said the police will be attending the church service in the area once a month. The community pastors will have different slots for devotion during the on-duty and off-duty parades and pray against crime generators.

Station Commander Colonel Theledi Gopane would like to thank the community pastors from St Peter’s by the Lake, St Francis Anglican and St Columba’s Parkview, St George’s Parktown, Parktown North Methodist Church, Park Kruin and St Francis in the Forest, Forest Town as well as Parkview Community Policing Forum.

Interested congregations are invited to be part of the pastors’ forum in Parkview policing precinct and may contact Captain Tintswalo Sibeko on 082 332 5024 or Constable Xongani Mathye on 082 543 8794.
