Childline reflects on 25 years of service

PARKTOWN – It has been 25 years of looking after the welfare of vulnerable children for Childline Gauteng and they still encourage community members to keep up the support.

Over 25 years, since the country’s democracy, Childline Gauteng reflected on how they have contributed to building stronger families and children through the delivery of about eight million services in democratic South Africa.

Director at Childline, Lynne Cawood expressed her gratitude, “We give thanks to our Creator for you, our members who have made this phenomenal achievement possible and have walked this journey with us for a quarter of a century. We have a total impact of 7 948 625 million.”

She added that, however, they were distraught that their collective promise of a better life for all has not been realised and would still continue to dedicate themselves to the provision of services and finding solutions with all their child-protection partners.

“We issue an urgent plea to all South Africans to restore our tradition of caring for our young in the interests of our children, grandchildren and generations to come,” Cawood said.

She said that as we approach the sixth democratic elections, Childline took note of the words of Father Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town, the successor to patron, Desmond Tutu as he said; “In South Africa today we face a new struggle, a struggle about values and institutions. We need to build strong systems that work to improve the lives of all our people, especially those of the poorest of the poor.”

She added that Makgoba urges citizens to vote in the upcoming elections for those who will represent the country’s values and will act in the interest of the country as a whole, especially to remove violence as a way of achieving our objectives.

Remembering that ‘It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults’, Cawood said they thank community members for building Childline into a powerful institution able to deliver services to the vulnerable and work collectively for a brighter future for all.
