Fourth Industrial Revolution and career choices explored

HOUGHTON – With the ongoing 4th Industrial Revolution, career options are also set to evolve and ORT explores them.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution could potentially bring about various career options for people.

The Internet of things, big data, machine learning and blockchain expertise are some of the Fourth Industrial Revolution careers which will offer massive opportunities in South Africa, according to ORT South Africa.

ORT SA is an educational and training non-governmental organisation in Stem (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) IT and enterprise development. They are affiliated to World ORT and operate in 38 countries around the globe.

World-renowned technology expert and ORT South Africa IT ambassador, Arthur Goldstuck, recently launched the ORT SA CareerHub, at the academy in Houghton.

“The CareerHub intends to become the centre for information and skills transfer to high school and university students as well as teachers, parents and people who are feeling ‘stuck’ in their career and need some guidance in choosing a career path,” said Ariellah Rosenberg, ORT SA CEO and visionary behind this idea.

Guest speaker for the launch, Goldstuck explained how some industries would generate new career opportunities and not necessarily lose posts. He said AI (artificial intelligence) would be a major job creator, contrary to popular belief.

Goldstuck referred to research done by Oxford University which rated the chances of survival of various careers; a cook has a 93 per cent chance of being replaced by a machine but a head chef has only a 10 per cent chance of being replaced due to the ingenuity and creativity needed for his job. He added that creative content would never become obsolete as digital platforms have a ‘voracious appetite’ for content.

In his article, Imagination drives the future of business tech, Goldstuck wrote” ‘The connection between what we do and what is possible, is imagination. It is the most important thing we have to make our lives better, from the smallest things in our personal lives to the way we transform businesses. All the way through to things that can solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. Technology is truly an enabler of our imagination.”

Rosenberg explained that the ORT SA CareerHub offered a series of talks and workshops based on the three ‘Es’ of careers; expose, explore and experience. It provides a range of information and skills required for people who are at a crossroads in their life seeking answers on the current and future workplace environment.

“The ‘explore’ aims at providing opportunities for people to reflect and find out more about themselves; skills, attributes, personalities and the fit to the world of work. The ‘expose’ aims at offering an insight into the jobs of the future. The ‘experience’ aims at providing practical skills to equip for the current and future jobs,” said Rosenberg.
