Parkhurst Primary library sees major revamp

PARKHURST – Library sees revamp after years of neglect.

The Parkhurst Primary School library has undergone a major revitalisation thanks to the work of two experienced librarians Liz Bourne and Margie Binckes.

“The last librarian left in 2012 and with nobody in charge, the library fell into disuse. In addition, the computer with the records of all the books was stolen,” explained Binckes.

The librarians became involved as volunteers in July 2017 in an effort to resuscitate the facility.

Headmaster Sanjeev Maharaj allocated a new computer to the library, old and battered books were removed, new software was loaded onto the computer and they began keeping book records.

Dipuo Peterson began working in the library on a full-time basis last year with guidance from Bourne and Binckes.

“Gradually, Peterson was able to take on all the tasks required of a fully functioning library. There is now an online catalogue with some 10 000 records of books and teaching materials,” said Binckes.

She explained that towards the end of last year, the library was opened to junior primary learners on a class-by-class basis. It is now open to all learners who can enjoy the benefits of a large selection of books.

Binckes concluded, “We believe there are so many benefits that come with reading which will improve the lives of learners forever. Most important is to encourage children to have fun and enjoy reading as a source of entertainment. Reading also develops the child’s imagination and creativity.”
