Parkview Constable says she enjoys engaging with community members at the station

PARKVIEW – Constable Shivambu discusses the joys and challenges of her work at the Parkview Police Station.

Constable Rirhandzu Shivambu of the Parkview Police Station is a socialite who loves building relationships with community members.

She has worked at the station since 2009. She works at the client service centre, takes part in stop and searches and attends to complaints in the field.

“I like to work with people and am talkative. I like interviewing people and building relationships with community members to ensure that the community is safe,” said Shivambu.

She was inspired to join the police after her brother told her about his work for the police. “My brother would tell us stories about his work, but I knew that I could run faster than him to catch the criminals. I found out more about the work through him and decided that I also wanted to work to protect the community.”

Shivambu encouraged community members to be the eyes and ears of the station.

“Any people who witness crimes should come forward to assist us in catching the criminals.”

She fondly recalls a housebreaking case in Greenside in 2016. “I drove around doing stop and searches and eventually found the items belonging to the complainant and arrested the suspect. Later, I testified in court and he was convicted for housebreaking, theft and possession of stolen property.”

The spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “Constable Shivambu is dedicated to her job and shows what a woman can do when she works outside of the station. Her strength and love for the community make her an asset to the station.”
