St John’s learner recites pi to 1 800 decimal digits

HOUGHTON – Grade 10 learner stuns educators at St John's with his achievement on International Pi Day.

Grade 10 learner Doug Brown of St John’s College celebrated International Pi Day in style on 14 March by reciting pi to 1 800 decimal digits.

In each maths class at St John’s, a competition was held to see who could recite the most digits of the decimal expansion of pi.

There were some impressive attempts with boys correctly reciting near 100 decimal digits and one effort that achieved 312 digits.

Brown was declared the champion after he recited 631 decimal digits of pi without error. He wrote out the digits in three panels on the board. At the end of the second panel (1 200 digits), he was told that there was an error. He was able to find the error and correct his mistake without further assistance.

He returned to continue with the ever-growing list of digits, again near 1 400 digits, he corrected an error and proceeded to achieve 1 800 decimal digits.

St John’s College is incredibly proud of Doug’s achievement.
