Fired up for Slipper Day

KILLARNEY – Participants keen to help a foundation fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses pioneered the launch of Slipper Day which will be on 10 May.

The official countdown to Slipper Day 2019 started at Killarney Country Club.

Slipper Day will be held on 10 May and is the largest fundraiser of the year by Reach For A Dream Foundation. TV personality, Roxy Burger explained that people could go to any Wimpy, Dischem or Pick n Pay to purchase a wristband for R10 then on the day, the people with the wristbands could wear their slippers anywhere or get a free coffee at Wimpy.

Through Slipper Day, the foundation aims to raise funds for children between the ages of three to 18 years who have life-threatening illnesses. Reach For A Dream CEO, Julia Sotirianakos said,

“All the funds from Slipper Day go into a dream pool to make a child’s dream come true and give them a positive lasting memory as well as hope to parents and courage to continue fighting their illnesses.”

A paediatric oncologist at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Doctor Gita Naidu, said she was emotional upon learning that one of her patients, ‘dreamer’ Musa Motha, was chosen to speak at the countdown function. She shared that Musa was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma which is a bone tumour in the lower limbs. Naidu added that unfortunately part of the treatment for Musa was to amputate his affected limb, and for many parents and doctors it was a petrifying ordeal.

However, nothing can hold Musa back and he is now a professional dancer. “At 17, my dream of meeting Black Coffee was fulfilled,” he said.

“Reach For A Dream also bought me a sound system and without the sound, I wouldn’t have discovered that I am a dancer, so I am very thankful,” said Motha.

The foundation has fulfilled 35 000 dreams in 30 years and encourages everyone to get their wristbands for the upcoming Slipper Day.
