St John’s Prep Academy launches with much success

HOUGHTON – The programme transports children from schools in the inner-city to St John's for three afternoons of supplementary education each week.

St John’s College has extended its successful academy programme to primary schoolboys this year, giving more children the benefit of supplementary education through the critical development stage of their lives.

The St John’s College Academy for high school learners celebrated its 11-year anniversary this year. It invites academically promising learners in Grade 10 to 12 from Yeoville, Hillbrow, Berea and Alexandra onto campus in the afternoons for academic enrichment in subjects including science, maths, English, technology and life skills.

The community-focused programme has extended this year to younger learners beginning at Grade 5 level. The Prep Academy will see learners remain in the programme until Grade 7 level, with a new intake of Grade 5 boys each year.

Both of these academies are funded by the St John’s Foundation through donations from businesses and the larger St John’s College community.

St John’s Preparatory head Patrick Lees said, “The boys, all of them around 10 years old, have been attending the St John’s Prep Academy for two weeks now, and it is just wonderful to see how they have embraced this opportunity.”

He explained that the boys are collected from their schools three afternoons a week and are brought to St John’s where they can eat lunch before their lessons. Learners receive tuition, workbooks, textbooks, stationery, transport and lunch as part of the programme.

Head of the Prep Academy Michelle Fehrsen said, “The primary school years are so critical in the academic development of all children. This is the stage when children acquire the foundation on which to build their future. It’s when children learn how to learn and that learning is fun and can be an adventure that lasts a lifetime.”
