St John’s Prep boys are SA Kids’ Lit Champions once again #SchoolSport

HOUGHTON – St John's Prep boys won the national quiz which took place at Roedean School recently.

St John’s Prep is proud of their boys who have taken the coveted title of SA Kids’ Lit Champions for the fourth time.

The competition, which took place at Roedean School, included nine teams from across the country, all of whom had won regional rounds in their areas.

The St John’s winning team included Roan Thomas, Kirin Brewer, Matthew Venter-Clelland and Daniel Bruwer.

St John’s Prep librarian Nicky Sulter said,

“The competition gives children the opportunity to read both widely and deeply and out of their comfort zones. It broadens their horizons which will stand them in good stead.”

The Kids’ Lit Quiz began 28 years ago as the brainchild of Wayne Mills, a lecturer at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He felt the need to promote the ‘sport of reading’ and give recognition to readers who are often highly accomplished and knowledgeable in a literary sense but did not necessarily gain the recognition their sporting counterparts did.

The Kids’ Lit Quiz was brought to South Africa 16 years ago by Marj Brown, a teacher and passionate literacy advocate. St John’s has participated in the quiz since its inception, winning the South African title a record four times.

Sulter said, “The world final gives our boys the opportunity to meet other passionate readers from across the globe where they often establish life-long connections. It is a unique and unforgettable experience.”

This year’s Kids’ Lit Quiz winners will compete in the world finals in Singapore in July.
