St John’s College rowers perform well at Buffalo Regatta #SchoolSports

HOUGHTON – Rowers representing St John's College were commended for their efforts at the Buffalo Regatta.

St John’s College rowing staff and boys were commended for their efforts at the 2019 Buffalo Regatta Tour in East London from 14 to 16 February.

The dual regatta layout made sure there was plenty of racing throughout the weekend. This was also the second year that the U15s were included in the tour to compete.

The Buffalo Regatta heats on 14 February saw many St John’s College rowers putting themselves in the finals that would be raced on 16 February for a chance at a podium finish. On 15 February there was a separate Selborne Sprints Regatta which saw the St John’s boys sprint in their heats over 500m to get into the six-lane finals and race their hearts out once more.

Noteworthy results included three gold medals from the U15s (scull, double and quad), three silver medals attained by the U16s (scull, coxed four and eight) and a gold, silver and three bronze medals from the Opens (second pair, second scull, first coxed and coxless four, and first eight respectively).

The final day of the regatta saw the racing return back to 1km racing for the juniors and 2km racing for the seniors. By this time, the boys were ready to attack and earn themselves a well-deserved Friesland milkshake afterwards.

The junior rowers set precedence in the regatta finals by claiming another three gold medals in the small boats and a fourth place in the octuple. The U16s medalled in every boat category, claiming two silver and three bronze medals on Saturday. The Opens also flew the flag of the college army high by winning one gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the finals.
