Joburg’s toughest half marathon returns in form of Pirates 21k

GREENSIDE – Joburg's most difficulty half marathon returns for its 41st edition.

Organisers of the 41st edition of the Pirates 21k expect 6 000 runners to hit the streets in Greenside and surrounding suburbs on 17 February.

The running club’s chairperson, David Case said this is a small increase on last year’s field size.

“This race goes over Northcliff Hill and is billed as Joburg’s toughest 21,” he said.

The half marathon provides great views as it goes over three infamous hills, the final hill topping out at 1 760m above sea level and is the highest point in any road race in Gauteng.

Whether runners have enough energy to enjoy the views is a different story.

The route has changed very little since the race started in 1979, and conquering this race should be on any runner’s bucket list.

Total prize money is R47 600, with equal prize money for both men and women. First prize is a very attractive R7 000, R3 500 for second place, down to R850 for fifth place.

There will also be cash prizes for the first male and female over 40 years, 50 years and 60 years. The first three junior boys and girls also receive cash prizes.

The first male and female runners over the highest point receive R1 000 each as the king and queen of the mountain.

The race starts and finishes at the Pirates Sports Club.

There are a number of food and drinks stalls that are set up for the race. Pirates also have play facilities for children and organisers are encouraging runners to bring their families with.

The entry fee for runners is R150 and the event is pre-entry only. Temporary running licences are sold for R35. The field is limited to 6 000 participants.
