Laerskool Jan Celliers welcomes Grade 1 learners

PARKVIEW – Laerskool Jan Celliers gave a warm welcome to their Grade 1 intake of the year 2019 and gave them words of advice for the year going forward.

Excitement filled the air as the young learners matched the environment with their green uniform. Laerskool Jan Celliers children and parents were happy and couldn’t wait to start their school year of 2019. The parents were proud of the Grade 1 learners who were making the move from pre-school to big school. They accompanied their children right to the door of the class they would be learning in for the rest of the year.

The school has three Grade 1 classes and the children were taken inside to meet their teachers before making a line towards their Welcoming Assembly. The first class teacher, Henrike Cronjé, hit the bell as her class made its way into the entrance to the assembly. The second teacher, Nora Muller, also hit the bell for her children to enter then lastly, Sonnika van den Berg did the same for her class.

The children then made their way to the school hall where they joined the rest of the school. School teacher Quintin Swanepoel said, “From my side, it is always nice to stand here at the beginning of the year and see your bright faces and how glad you are to be back. Good luck for 2019. You are all welcome to the first day of school in the year 2019.”

The minister, Natalie van Deventer, also welcomed the children and led the prayer session as well as song.

Headmaster of the school Gerhard Keyter also addressed the assembly and acknowledged the grades 6 and 7 learners who came out top in the ICAS exams (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) with three in the top 10 for English, nine in the top 10 for maths and two in the top 10 for science. He encouraged the remaining learners to follow in their footsteps to achieve the same or even better. The learners and teachers at assembly were also treated to a video of a concert instrumental performance.
