ROSEBANK – Police and security companies conducted a festive season safety- awareness campaign in the Rosebank CBD educating the public about petty crimes in the area.

Rosebank police, Rosebank Management District and a number of security companies joined hands to conduct a festive season safety awareness campaign in the Rosebank CBD on 9 November.

Spokesperson for the Rosebank Police Station Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said, “Our drive today is to highlight problematic crimes including common robberies, theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles taking place in the area.

“We are handing out flyers here outside Starbucks because of the construction site across the road. Construction sites are very dangerous because there is a lot of activity here with vehicles constantly coming through to drop off materials. Criminals commonly hide behind the construction workers with the intention to commit crime. This has resulted in the escalation of robberies and crime.

“We are conducting this awareness campaign to show that we have a zero-tolerance approach to crime and want to see a safe festive season in Rosebank.”

The campaign began outside the construction site opposite Starbucks in Tyrwhitt Avenue and continued with a roadblock at the intersection of Jan Smuts and Jellicoe avenues and concluded outside the Johannesburg Zoo.

Security companies including Excellerate Security, Furion Security, Security Web, ADT, Total Imvula, 24/7 Security came out to join the campaign.

Rosebank Management District precinct manager Chris Harris said that this is the third drive they have conducted in order to minimise petty crimes including the theft of cell phones, laptops, watches and handbags in the area.

“We have seen a rise in crimes targeting people making use of Taxify or Uber when they stand with their phones on the street. We are distributing 5 000 flyers to educate the public about their personal safety.”

Integrated services manager at Excellerate Security Christo Botha said, “People should treat their phones and valuables like cash and be careful about taking them out on the street. They should also leave their expensive watches at home and be more proactive in looking out for criminals. We are also educating people to report crimes to the police so that they can reflect accurate statistics of crime in the area.”

Operations director of Furion Security Frank Nel said he has seen a significant drop in crime since their last campaign and hopes this initiative will do the same.
