Nappy Run gains momentum at Joburg Zoo

PARKVIEW – People came out in their numbers to come and run, walk or stroll 5km at the Johannesburg Zoo as part of the Nappy Run campaign to raise funds, collect nappies and create awareness for children with disabilities.

Every now and then efforts are made to bring awareness to the often-marginalised groups in society and among these are children with disabilities.

People from across Joburg came out in their numbers for one such awareness project, the Nappy Run™ campaign’s 5km fun run event at the Johannesburg Zoo. The campaign is one among the many campaigns run by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities and was launched in 2011 at Sun City.

The event took place on 3 November and purposefully coincided with National Children’s Day. Public relations and communications officer at the council, Thuli Witbooi said they had Momentum as the main sponsor, and Casual Day, which is also a flagship or one of the campaigns of the council, was also present.

“The fun walk/run/stroll is aimed at raising funds as well as collecting nappies which are a costly necessity for children with disabilities. Last year we raised about 25 000 nappies and this year we are hoping to get about 50 000 nappies,” said Witbooi.

Specialist in Advocacy, Policy and Children’s matters at the council, Andre Kalis said this was an opportunity for people to contribute by making a public stand for the rights of children with disabilities.

“The event is the pinnacle of the two-month run campaign. The campaign will carry on until 3 December which will be International Day for Persons with Disabilities,” said Kalis.
