Parktown Boys’ water polo coach, Collan Rex, to be sentenced on 31 October

PARKTOWN – Rex is set to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates' Court on 31 October for his sentencing.

The sentencing date for the former Parktown Boys’ High School assistant water polo coach Collan Rex has been set for 31 October.

This follows the guilty judgement against Rex for 144 charges of sexual assault and 12 common assault counts. During his trial, Rex pleaded guilty to 144 charges of sexual assault against 12 schoolboys.

He also faced charges of attempted murder, rape, sexual grooming and exposing minors to pornography.

During his trial, he admitted to acts of grabbing and squeezing boys’ genitals as well as rubbing his penis against several boys while they were fully clothed.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi welcomed the guilty verdict in Rex’s trial. “We are relieved that they have found a guilty verdict and we’ll pick up the pieces on all other areas where the judge felt there was no concrete evidence or the evidence was not convincing because that evidence may impact some of the disciplinary processes that we find ourselves in.”

The representative for the school’s governing body Kim van Es said they were relieved that the case was finally over and pleased that justice had been served and hoped that this would assist in the healing process for the school.

The sentencing in the trial against Rex was postponed in September because the victim impact statements conducted by social workers were incomplete.
