Rosebank Police Station‘s Crime Prevention team wants to ensure that there is enough police visibility in the Rosebank CBD and Sector 2 areas looking forward to the festive season.
The team of six officers explained that they will be conducting stop-and-searches for unlicensed firearms, dangerous weapons, drugs, stolen vehicles and stolen property.
“We need the community to assist us by reporting any suspected criminal activity,” said Constable Caseus Sambo.
Spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said that this team was responsible for the arrest of three wanted suspects last month, who they apprehended on one of their patrols.
Some challenges faced by these policemen include drunk drivers, pedestrians who refuse to cooperate with police and displaced people who use the money they receive from begging to buy drugs and alcohol.
“We urge community members to not give money to beggars as many of them use the money to buy drugs and alcohol. We also ask that the community works with us to minimise crime by keeping their belongings safe in order to avoid theft out of motor vehicles when they park their cars on the street,” said Mdletshe.
He explained that a Dunkeld resident was robbed of his Rolex watch in his driveway last week after it appeared that he was followed home.
“We encourage residents to rather leave their watches at home in order to prevent this from reoccurring,” he said, adding that the shooting incident that took place outside Standard Bank on 31 August was also part of the Rolex incidents, as the criminals shot at a security guard who intervened after the suspects stole a watch.
“The Crime Prevention team will work tirelessly until the first week of January by patrolling hotspots and conducting roadblocks to minimise crime. We really want to bring down crime in the area with the support of the community,” concluded Mdletshe.
