Malcolm Dorfman teams kicks butt at KWF South African Senior Championship
PARKTOWN – A pleasing feature of the medal haul was the depth shown by the Dorfman karate team by featuring strongly and successfully in all category levels.
The Malcolm Dorfman Parktown North Dojo and Shane Dorfman Norwood Dojo showed the true essence and ethos of karate at the KWF South African Senior Championship held at the end of August.
Nick Baker, a 4th dan, has year after year taken the Men’s Open Black Belt Kata title and easily repeated this achievement to take the gold medal and title. Christopher Anthony a 3rd dan, who is a regular training member at both dojos, took the Men’s Open Black Belt Kumite (fighting) title, beating 5th dan Moses Sebopa, who also trains at both dojos. Sebopa took the silver medals in both the men’s open black belt categories.
A total of seven gold medals, eight silver medals and 15 bronze medals was the eventual tally accumulated by the Dorfman karate team.
Gold medals were also won by Arnold Sachs (veteran black belt kata), Paul Smith bagged two (novice kihon ippon kumite and novice kata) and Kisha Ally took two (intermediate kata and intermediate kihon ippon kumite).
Silver medals in addition to the two won by Sebopa were taken by:
- Aimee Muha (female cadet kumite)
- two by Jo van Der Merwe (novice kata and novice kihon ippon kumite)
- Tony Maunder (veteran black belt kata)
- Liesl Lohlun (female open black belt kata)
- Shahnaaz Omar (intermediate kihon ippon kumite)
The 15 bronze medals were taken by:
- Brendan Rakusin (male open black belt kumite)
- two by Kaylin Lovell (female open black belt kata and female open black belt kumite)
- Arnold Sachs (veteran black belt kumite)
- Petra Booysen (veteran black belt kata)
- two by Aimee Muha (female cadet kumite and female brown belt kata)
- three by Michelle Fleming (female brown belt kumite, intermediate kihon ippon kumite, female intermediate kata)
- Robert Lindsay (male brown belt kata)
- Shahnaaz Omar (intermediate kata)
Joint third place bronze medals were won by siblings Daniel Crawford and Michelle Flinner (novice kihon ippon kumite) and Tracey-Lee Kotzen (novice kata).
