An epic cycling initiative
HOUGHTON – The Cycalive project launched on 5 August at the Mandela Centre of Memory.
The Mandela Centre of Memory was abuzz when the Cycalive project kicked off on 5 August.
The Cycalive project is an annual outreach programme where Grade 11 students from various schools cycle all the way from Johannesburg to Durban in support of building bridges and forming bonds between young South Africans, to raise funds for much-needed educational projects, and to highlight the importance of road safety and the Arrive Alive campaign among others.
The participating students are from Moletsane High School, Pace Commercial Secondary School in Soweto, Torah Academy in Orchards and Orange Farm Schools. They were all joined by Israeli schoolchildren brought out by Partnership2Gether.
The cyclists are expected to arrive in Durban on 9 August with a welcome by civic dignitaries and community leaders before heading back to Johannesburg.
Dean of Torah Academy Rabbi Dovid Hazdan said, “The message we are trying to convey is that there is a possibility of bringing togetherhood and brotherhood, and finding the common denominator in humanity.”
“This does not require diluting who we are but we can be proud of who we are as long as we remain tolerate.”
National Director of South Africa Jewish Board of Deputies Wendy Kahn said that the project focuses on finding commonalities between people from different background and applauded the initiative.
