Parktown Boys’ High School was honoured by a visit from world-renowned ability activist Michaela Mycroft. She was in Johannesburg as part of the Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations, meeting with Barack Obama.
The main reason for Michaela’s visit was to introduce Parktown Boys’ High School to The Chaeli Campaign whereby students will become 2018 Pay-It-Forward Ambassadors.
She delivered an inspiring motivational talk wherein she explained how through her perseverance and motivation she had overcome her perceived disabilities.
She answered questions from learners who wanted to know in more detail how she had achieved so much.
Michaela suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. However, this has not prevented her from leading an extremely active life. She has completed three Argus Cycle Tours in a buggy attached to a bicycle. Her role is to maintain the balance of the buggy ‘so that we don’t fall over the cliff’.
She has also ‘climbed’ Mount Kilimanjaro with the assistance of able-bodied climbers.
In addition, she has achieved an honour’s degree at University of Cape Town.
The initiative to get her to address the learners of Parktown Boys’ High was achieved by Grade 11 learner Dean Fin as part of the school’s charity organisation, Heart of the Lion.
The school is thrilled to be a part of such an exceptional campaign and look forward to working side by side with Michaela and her mother Zelda Mycroft
