Domestic Watch meeting puts the spotlight on child trafficking

PARKVIEW – Child trafficking was the main point of discussion at this MAD meeting.

A group of domestic workers braved the wind and cold and gathered in George Hay Park to take part in an informative meeting about child trafficking and missing children.

Head of Making A Difference (MAD), Penny Steyn, headed the Domestic Watch crime prevention meeting. Steyn said it is critically important to know that, according to statistics, a child gets abducted every 30 seconds in South Africa and that child could change hands up to 21 times. “These children are sold for sex and this is the second biggest crime in the world,” said Steyn.

What we can we do to protect our children:

  • Know where your child is at all times and always make a mental note of what they are wearing
  • Keep a recent photograph of your child in your purse/wallet or on your cell phone
  • Know the names, addresses and numbers of all your child’s friends
  • Keep your child close to home and teach them to never, ever, walk alone
  • Get your child an ID bracelet or other means of identification that has your phone number on it
  • Show your children how to get to the nearest police station, hospital or clinic
  • Teach your children how to attract attention when in trouble.

Teach the following important numbers to your child:

  • Police 10111
  • Emergency cell phone help 112
  • Missing Children SA 072 647 7464
  • South African Police Service Crime Stop 086 001 0111
  • Childline 080 005 5555.
