Parkview and Parkhurst residents step up to donate funds for school hockey tour

PARKVIEW – Boys and girls at Parkview Senior School thrive to keep fit and warm by taking part in sports.

Young sports enthusiasts at Parkview Senior School beat the cold weather by warming themselves up during sports.

In the sports line up were the trials for Athletics Day as well as the upcoming girls and boys’ hockey team camp, which is to take place in July.

Head of sports at the school, Tyrone Pugh said, “We will be taking 26 of our hockey players to a campsite called Camp Discovery, which is close to Pretoria. We worked out the costs and we realised that we were going to be short.”

In attempting to solve the problem, Pugh said they started fundraising, which included the cake sale they had a week before, which was a huge success.

“I also put up a Facebook post asking people for donations and people living between Parkview and Parkhurst were phenomenal.”

He expressed his deeply-felt gratitude on behalf of his colleague, Sonya Postma as well as the rest of the school for the generosity that everyone offered. He said they had received monetary donations as well as donations to help with the cake sale and the hockey team was looking forward to the tour.

“I am really excited to go on this camp; I’ve been playing hockey for the longest time and the training has been a really fun experience, which helped me improve a lot and hockey is probably one of my favourite sports,” Liberte Ngcobo, member of the girls’ hockey team said.

Yarden Dagan who has been playing hockey since Grade 4 said it was a really fun sport and she looked forward to the camp as they were going to learn so much more about the game.

Pugh said the camp will be their bigger training season for the year. “The camp is four days and each day has a different programme. In the mornings there will be hockey skills training and in the afternoons they will be having lunch breaks as well as inter-schools competitions since there will be about 14 schools there.”

Meanwhile, the sports houses, Eagles and Falcons were engrossed in the athletics trials prior to the Athletics Day. Thabo Mohale an ‘open runner’ who participated in all running events including 80m, 400m and relays said that he didn’t feel ready and so would be training during the holidays.
