Blankets for dogs in need

SANDTON – A community member's passion for dogs drives her enthusiasm to collect donations to buy blankets for dog shelters.

A Bryanston Montessori pre-school teacher is giving back to the community by collecting monetary donations from communities within Rosebank, Sandton and Randburg for dog shelters.

“I am passionate about two things in life, children and dogs. I used to be a dog walker called Paw walker. I also used to volunteer at the Sandton SPCA for about two years,” Chiara Cohen said.

Cohen shared that she had two German shepherds she grew up with and referred to them as her children. When she got married in 2016 her dream had been for them to walk her down the aisle but unfortunately, they passed away. The dog fanatic said she was completely crushed and had a picture of the dogs on her bouquet.

“I cannot bear the thought of dogs being cold in these shelters in winter,” Cohen said.

“So, I have been collecting monetary donations that I use strictly to buy soft, washable warm blankets for the shelters. My goal was initially to get 500 blankets this winter, I am so happy to say I have reached my goal and beyond and still going.”

She said she collects all donations through social media including Facebook and posts on a lot of community pages and sites. Cohen expressed her gratitude for the support from these communities as well as her wish to save and help all the dogs in the world.

In response to people who might ask why Cohen doesn’t help people in need she said, “I help wherever I can. There is an orphanage down the road where I work and I have also posted on Facebook community pages as well as cleaned out my cupboards to donate clothing for them.

“We tend to collect for underprivileged people but why not for animals too as they have no voice.”
