St Teresa’s bids farewell to ‘South Block’

ROSEBANK – The building known as the 'South Block' to St Teresa's is finally being demolished and the school looks forward to an improved building in its place.

In 2001 St Teresa’s School purchased a building right next door to its premises and altered it to what they thought would be used for school purposes as it housed a media centre, art room, computer lab, auditorium, science lab, technology lab and music classroom.

However, they realised it didn’t quite fit into the school’s look and have therefore decided to demolish it and build a more suitable building that fits the ethos and look of St Teresa’s.

Jean Carey, principal of the intermediate phase said, “We hoped that demolition would start last year, but experienced some delays due to processes that had to be followed such as submitting documentation to municipal institutions. We finally succeeded and are now in the process of demolishing the building.”

She said they hope the process of bringing the building down will be finished by the end of the week then hopefully next week they can go ahead with constructing the new building. Plans for the new building have been drawn up by architects Saville Row. They are in constant contact with the engineering team and town planners to ensure the project progresses smoothly. Completion of the project should be in 2019.

“We want the future building to be the most beautiful one, admired by passers-by and most importantly it must be more in keeping with the school’s ethos, which is a Catholic-based school founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1930,” Carey shared.

The school hopes to maintain the ethos of what the sisters started back then because their heritage is very important to the school and the children. “We may have a lot of budding engineers and architects in the future as our learners are experiencing the whole process right in front of them.”
