Big achievement for the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg

PARKTOWN – The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg is very proud after learners brought home different medals.

Four learners from the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg have proved that hard workers only sleep for less than eight hours after bringing home a combination of 29 medals.

The 21st Annual South African Championships of Performing Arts 2018 awards ceremony was hosted from 30 March – 8 April 2018 at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

The four competitors represented the Gauteng province and competed alongside 15 000 other participators.

The learners spent hours rehearsing every weekend with a 12-hour final dress rehearsal marathon.

A Grade 3 child, Andreas Alderton, who bagged six gold medals and one silver medal, was very excited about winning and said, “It is always an honour to represent Gauteng, but to win a medal just feels like magic.”

One of the participants is sad that he cannot afford to advance further in the competition in California.

“We are unfortunately not able to go to the World Championships due to financial constraints. The trip would cost approximately R65 000 per contestant and my mom has three children. Hopefully, this dream will one day become true for us,” said Michael Alderton, who has six gold medals and one silver under his belt.

Jenna Alderton, who is in Grade 6 bagged five gold medals, two silvers and one bronze, while Cheyenne Lühning, a Grade 6 learner won five gold medals, a silver and a bronze.

“It was crazy. We drove back and forth to Rustenburg every day. Sometimes we only had five hours sleep but mom helped us. And the other kids in our team became like family. We were all in this together. It was an experience of a lifetime,” said Andreas.

The school is proud to announce that the student winners were selected to represent the South African team at the World Championships of Performing Arts from 2 – 18 July 2018 and were supposed to be taking a trip to Westin Long Beach Hotel, California, in the USA, but due to financial constraints, the trip has been cancelled.
