Colombia discusses the issue of illicit drugs in SA

FERNDALE – The Embassy of Colombia in South Africa imparted their knowledge on how to best curb the problem of illicit drugs in the country.

The Embassy of Colombia in South Africa, together with the Randburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), recently hosted a conference at Monash University on how Columbia addressed the problem of illicit drugs and how our country can learn from their strategies.

On the day, the Colombian embassy brought some of its country’s officials and law enforcement agents to share their approach and experience. Some of the tools highlighted showed how Colombia can serve as a model for tackling the drug problem.

One of the sentiments shared by the embassy was that they would never give up the fight against drugs and crime in their country. They also explained that they want to work with countries that face similar struggles as a way to combat the issue together.

CEO of the chamber, Linda Blackbeard, said people pretend that illicit drugs in the country do not affect them. She explained that the scourge has affected children, as they become addicted at a young age. “We have to… educate people about the mater,” she said.

Blackbeard said the chamber is an integral part of community’s CPFs and the likes, and this makes them part of the community. She thought that such conferences were important to have, as South Africa can learn from countries like Colombia which are working on the elimination of illicit drugs that ruin the progression of a country.

The chamber’s president, Neil Pollock was grateful for the knowledge and insight shared by the embassy and compelled his fellow countrymen to apply what they had learnt. “This is a gift we cannot put a monetary value to.” Adding that the information should be used to its best.
