Councillor helps residents with valuation objections

Residents are advised to lodge their objections online through the City of Johannesburg's website or via a walk-in centre before the 6 April by 3pm.

The City of Johannesburg recently published a General Valuation Roll for 2018 with some valuation increases of up to 70 per cent which have caught many residents by surprise.

In light of the widespread confusion caused by the valuation increases, Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck held a valuation help session for Parkhurst residents on the 17 March. The session was part of the councillor’s planned rates valuations help sessions which aim to assist residents with valuation objections.

Residents are advised to lodge their objections online through the City of Johannesburg’s website or via a walk-in centre before the 6 April by 3pm.

In the meantime, residents are advised to follow these tips:

  • Understand the City of Johannesburg’s valuation process by visiting their website and checking your property value.
  • Understand your property’s current market value by using Lightstone and PropIQ valuation reports which can be used as evidence of your objection
  • Use the services of your local estate agent
  • Lodge an objection online or via walk-in centre if your property is overvalued
  • Residents have 30 days to appeal once valuation officials have considered all objections and made a decision.
