Prestige Cup reaches a thrilling conclusion at Roedean

HOUGHTON – Prestige Cup between Old Mutual and Roedean School hones swimming skills for learners.

The finals of the eighth season of the Old Mutual/Roedean School Prestige Cup, which kicked off in September last year, were held at Roedean School in Houghton. St Stithians beat Crawford College 8–5 to take the 2018 event on 17 February.

“The tournament has established itself as unique in that it requires all ten competing schools to have a corporate social initiative (CSI) Learn-To-Swim component,” said Anita Trninic, head of water polo at Roedean School.

“Each school has partnered with an under-resourced school and has implemented a sustainable programme, which teaches swimming and/or water polo at its partnership school.”

A highlight of the finals on the day was the swim-a-thon, where all the partnership schools are invited to swim and showcase their swimming skills. Trninic added that all participating schools at the Prestige Cup received much-needed sponsorship that went towards boosting their learn-to-swim programme.

“The prize money received by the top three schools was donated to their partnership schools [as part of the initiative] to develop their learn-to-swim programme further.”
